The Adoption Process

People often ask us what the process is for adopting a GSP Rescue. So we thought we would list it here to answer some common questions.

First, every adopter must complete the Adoption Application listed on the page. This helps us to learn more about the adopter and to help match dogs to people.

We then call the vet listed on the application to check items like was the pet up to date on vaccines, was it kept on heartworm preventative and have yearly checkups.

If the vet check is positive we request via telephone or email to see what dogs the applicant is interested in. Once an adopter has a particular dog(s) in mind, a homecheck is performed.

Once the homecheck is complete and approved, the applicant can meet the dog(s). We often take pictures on the homecheck as it gives the fosterer of the dog a better idea of the outdoor environment.

Almost always fencing is a requirement for a rescue dog. Most have had little to no training, yet they need exercise and a fenced yard keeps them safe. An untrained dog can simply dart off without proper containment. Either physical or efence should be in place, or if someone lives very close to a park or dogpark where they can take the dog to run, we sometimes waive the fencing restriction if we believe the applicant has the dedication to get the dog to the park several times daily. If you have never had efencing we prefer that a recommended company install the fence and train your dog, we have companies we do recommend that offer discounts to people who adopt from rescue. We have had dogs killed and some have lost limbs going through self installed efencing, so we prefer if there is no prior experience with it on the applicant's part, that we leave the install and training to the professionals.

We are not here to move dogs from A to B, we are here to help people and dogs find the right matches for a lifetime committment. We hope you will be patient with us knowing that dogs and applications arrive daily and we do our best to get to each as quickly as possible.

Rescue microchips each dog to the rescue and after a dog is adopted the new owner is added as a contact on the chip registration. The chip database allows us to add as many names as you would like, so if you'd like more contacts than the rescue and you, we will happily add those.
